Is it safe to give a dementia patient seroquel (quetiapine) and clonapin?

To treat or not to: All seroquel (quetiapine) class medications carry a warning against using antipsychotic medications in patients with alzheimer's . There is a significant risk of cardiovascular and other causes of death when such patients are put on a drug like seroquel (quetiapine). However, sometimes people with alzheimer's have serious psychoses that would be inhumane not to treat. Clonopin increases the risk of falls. It can be used but in very low doses.

Likely so: But ask the prescriber who knows the specifics about the persons diagnosis, symptoms, allergies, other medications, other medical problems and the many other things one must know to properly prescribe for a person.

Sometimes safest: The patient who exhibits increasing behavioral disruption will likely require a drug such as seroquel (quetiapine) to control dangerous activity, but there is a risk in elderly of stroke, and cardiac complications. Clonapin has many anti-cholinergic effects, which can increase cognitive impairments and even agitation, and sleep disruption. Other drugs can be used instead.
