Did you do,it right?: You are describing a valsalva manuever. For it to work pressurized air must get behind the soft palate to gain access to the eustachian tube openings. Therefore as you close the mouth and blow out while plugging your nose a little air must leak out thru the nose. If you are doing it right then tube might be tight. Sudafed may help, if tight.
