Bacterial infection: Brucellosis is a bacterial infection, common in domesticated animals and is some times acquired through contact with animals or animal products. It causes a febrile illness with bone pains, enlargement of liver spleen and general debility. Some types of brucella organisms cause abortions in animals. The illness can be treated with antibiotics.

It depends.: Brucellosis is a disease that chiefly affects livestock (cattle and goats), and can be transferred to humans if precautions are not taken (goggles, rubber gloves). If a woman is pregnant, the main treatment (tetracyclines) should be avoided since they can damage growing teeth and bones. Children also should avoid this treatment for the same reason.
