Serious: He should quit smoking now and forever. He will get some breathing effort practice preop for post op. 3 bypass is average number(3-4) at 48 and depending on his other risks, he has a good opportunity.

Needs to quit: While there are many factors which can lead to arteriosclerosis, the one constant is cigarette smoking. He has a least a 38 pack year history, and is now having surgery. If he continues to smoke, expect more blockages in other locations.
