Beta thal major: Cooley's anemia is known as beta thalassemia major. Starting during the first year of life, they have profound and life-long transfusion-dependent anemia, large liver/spleen , and skeletal deformities due to bone marrow expansion; they are prone to infection and skeletal fractures and, unless appropriately treated, die during adolescence of iron overload syndromes.
