Hydroquinone, time: Scars mature and can continue to improve for up to a year. They are sun-sensitive and may become hyperpigmented with sun exposure. The best way to treat a scar depends on the scar. Options include silicone gel, silicone sheeting, use of filler (for spot or crater-like scars), laser therapy, hydroquinone, dermabrasion, or kenalog (triamcinolone) injection, or surgical scar revision. See your plastic surgeon.

Options: You cannot erase scars. Poor scars can be improved through the following methods:
1) scar massage
2) silicone sheeting (a kind of silicone tape you where over the scar)
3) steroid injections
4) laser treatment (helps remove coloring)
5) scar revision (removing the scar and starting over).

Scars: It is unfortunately difficult to fade old scars. There is minimal to no help with the silicon creams and gels that are available. Sometimes, laser therapy can help.

Generally a scar will 'remodel' over a 2 year time period. So if it's more than 2 years - don't expect much. A plastic surgeon may however be able to help with 'scar revision' - where they try various procedures to make the scar look better. Worth checking out if it really bothers you AND you have the cash.
