Easier method: If it needs to be treated most can be closed with an umbrella like device which is implanted to close the hole. This is done by going through your vein using a catheter, thus avoiding open heart surgery.

It depends: Atrial septal defects (ASD) are generally treated with surgery. However, you would need an evaluation by a cardiologist (heart specialist) and/or a cardiothroacic surgeon (heart surgeon) to determine the best treatment.
