Prevention: CF is caused by a genetic problem resulting in poor sodium control in cells. There are several genetic subtypes. Tx is directed at preventing lung infections, maintaining adequate nutrition (through increased calories & enzyme replacement) & salt intake. Best be treated at center that specializes in cf. Where a team approach provides all services needed or anticipated. Where research is ongoing.

Many options...: Depending on your age, lung function (determined by the pulmonary function tests your pulmonologist makes you take every visit), genetic profile (i.e. Mutation type), and what (if any) bacterium you are chronically infected with, the treatments vary. The best way to get treated is to go to your local CF center. A list of these can be found here: http://www.Cff.Org/livingwithcf/carecenternetwork/.
