I suspect an allergy to benadryl (diphenhydramine) altho it's rare. is there a test for this type of allergy to confirm? i get hives.

Just avoid: Benadryl (diphenhydramine). There are other antihistamines. Hives develop from a signal from the brain to histamine releasing cells in the skin. It is often a cause from poor diet, especially sugar.
