I have stopped all psychotropic drugs during my pregnancy, i feel like i'm going crazy, do i have to wait till i'm done breast feeding to go back on?

Risk vs. benefit: You would have to weigh risks of taking psychotropics in view of potential damage to your fetus vs. The risks of being mentally unstable and have terrible and potentially unsafe pregnancy. There are certain medications that are in class d and x that must be discontinued. Class c drugs again need to be weighed against their benefits to you.

Not necessarily: Many of the ssri medications reach such low concentrations in breast milk that they are considered safe during lactation. If you have stopped on your own, please consult with your doc and the ob.Baby needs a healthy mom during pregnancy and some psychotropics have a better safety profile than others during pregnancy. I often deal with the transient effects of these meds in the newborn. They do well.

Don't go crazy: Having a newborn is hard enough. If you feel like you are going crazy, get back on your meds and stop breastfeeding. It is true that "breast is best" ...But only generally. There are lots of reasons that people can't breastfeed. Formula is a great alternative. Don't feel guilty about it. There is no need to tough it out without your meds. Your baby will thank you for it. Best wishes.

Consult with your: Psychiatrist. They can advise you. Some meds have less risks and depending on your symptoms and issues they can help you. Also are you in therapy? If not please get back in psychotherapy. Good luck.

Frustrating: There are different levels of risk with pregnancy with different psychotropic medications. Your OB/your psychiatrist and you should go over your meds carefully to determine if any should be restarted as your mental health is important.
