Yes and no: Antihistamines, as their name implies, effectively treat itching caused by histamine released from immune cells. This includes allergies, but also other disorders that cause histamine release, like chronic hives or mastocytosis. Itching from other causes, like liver disease or disorders of the nerves, typically does not respond to antihistamines. Talk with your doctor for more info.
