Anemia is a concern: There are several types of anemia, the most common is iron deficiency. Red blood cells are made and renewed every 120 days and require iron for production. A lack of iron or (folic acid) can cause a low number of red blood cells also known as anemia. Heavily menstruating women can have anemia from blood loss as well as conditions like uterine fibroids as a cause.

If symptomatic: You might be anemic if your are tired, pale, have had chemo, have an inherited hemoglobinopathy, eat a bizarre diet, have ulcer symptoms, black stools or blood in your urine. Your family doctor can usually easily determine if you are anemic.
