Depends: An early anal fissure can be cured with local treatments such as pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, and measures to prevent constipation straining and diarrhea. Older chronic fissures may need surgery such as an anal sphincter partial incision.

Any over-the-counter help for someone with an anal fissure that hurts off and on?

Some help: Balneol cream and tucks (witch hazel) pads may be somewhat soothing. Sitz baths with epsom salts may also help. Sit in a bath tub with just enough hot water to cover your anal area (not hot enough to burn you but as hot as you can tolerate) and supersaturate with about 12 tblspn of epsom salts.10 minutes twice a day. Usually is quite effective.

What are the treatments for an anal fissure?

Dr. Charles Cattano answered
Gastroenterology 39 years experience
Anal fissures no fun: Anal fissures are like paper-cuts in the anus. They can bleed, hurt, & recur, particularly with defecation & any other activity that increases pelvic pressure. Disorders of anal-rectal function, straining at hard stool, prolonged sitting, heavy lifting, long distance walks/runs are causative & should be addressed. If stool softeners, fiber, topical rx, & behavior changes don't cure, see a surgeon.

My fiance has anal fissure and now I wonder what I am getting into. Will this affect his ability to work?

Dr. Eric Kaplan answered

Only short term: Anal fissures are usually treatable medically and at worse case scenario with surgery. They are not severe life threatening problems if treated properly, and do not shorten life span. If he is missing work from this he needs to get proper treatment so he can return to work permanently.
