I have noticed that my ear thermometer by braun always seems to read a degree or so higher than my digital. is this generally the case?

Check the setting: Some of these thermometers allow you t set the readout as oral vs rectal and program in an extra degree for the rectal setting. It may require reading through the instructions that came with the product to reset it.

Several factors: The braun thermoscan thermometer measures the infrared heat generated by the tympanic membrane of the ear. Technique is always a potential explanation of aberrancy in readings. Ear wax, contour of the canal can cause variation in temperature. There is variation in temperature readings depending on whether one uses axillary thermometers, rectal thermometers, oral or typmpanic thermometers.
