Alcohol: As a drug, alcohol is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. With the first drink, though, a person might be dis-inhibited or freed of his/her usual anxieties and concerns -- thus feeling more sociable & funny, and acting more spontaneously. This can appear to be like "a stimulant." but with continued drinking, the CNS depressant effects accumulate -- and mental functioning slows down.
