Yes: Ect has been used for many year to treat severe depression. Fortunately, there are now many medication options to treat major depression, however, sometimes the medications do not work or have significant side effects. It is at those times, that doctors recommend ect. Ect also has side effects, but it can be very effective and importantly take effect more quickly than medications.
