Why was my friend told they could not donate blood because of receiving syphilis in a blood transfusion?

Re-ask your friend..: Syphilis will get you deferred as a donor until well after treatment, but is not a significant risk factor from receiving blood products--so likely it was some other (viral) disease if via transfusion, -or- (more likely) it was contracted somewhere else and blame-shifted to transfusion. Us blood system is extremely safe, in part due to extensive testing for diseases / other abnormalities.
