Possible Menopause: That kind of menstrual irregularity is very common in peri-menopause and is most likely due to inadequate progesterone. You could consult with a hormone doc and get some hormonal intervention during this time.

Maybe, but.....: What you describe is defined as dysfunctional uterine bleeding, or dub. Dub may be caused by approaching menopause, but it may also represent other abnormalities, and needs an evaluation by a gyn. Myou may need a endovaginal ultrasound and possibly an endometrial biopsy.
