Several: Venous clots can cause blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) which can be life threatening. They can also get infected under some circumstances and sometimes can cause compromised circulation the the extremity. Arterial clots can cause loss of limb due to the higher incidence of circulation compromise, and if from the heart may cause stroke.
