Pain swelling deform: Are all signs of a fracture. An exam and the appropriate x-ray based upon the exam is the typical starting point. Some fractures needed further advanced imaging studies such as MRI , ct scan or bone scan to define.

Pain, swelling. : If something hurts, is swollen, is bruised, or doesn't seem to be aligned the way you remember it, see your doctor for an x-ray. X-rays are the best way to tell definitively if a bone is broken.
