Many possibilities: An upper GI fluoro study images the mucosa and the contours of the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small bowel called the duodenum. In case I am misunderstanding the question, an upper endoscopy evaluates these same areas using a small camera to directly look at them. Some diseases that can be diagnosed by an upper gi: ulcers, strictures, tumors, hiatal hernia and motility disorders.

Upper GIs: An Upper GI is just a radiologic study to assess the internal structure from mouth to stomach and sometimes first portion of small intestine. It makes sure there are no areas of narrowing or obstruction. This is a performed in the same place you would get an Xray taken. This is different than an endoscopy done by a gastroenterologist which uses a camera and are able to obtain biopsies.
