Surfactant: The surface tension of the lining of the alveoli. This then allows the lungs to open up easier and more fully and deliver oxygen easier and discard of the carbon dioxide easier.

See below. : It prevents the walls of the alveoli from sticking together (resulting in atelectasis), when the baby exhales, therefore making it easier for the baby to breathe, and yield a better oxygen transport.
