A 30-year-old female asked:

which hormones exactly deficient in pcos ... me quite confused is it a deficiency of progesterone or estrogen levels r increased or both r deficient ?

Variable: No one quite knows what "causes" pcos. There is a relative increase in testosterone from the ovary in response to elevated lh from the pituitary gland. Elevated testosterone in the ovary inhibits ovulation from the ovary leading to menstrual cycle changes. Pcos women also may have Insulin resistance and have trouble regulating blood sugar leading to increased weight.

No: Postpartum baby blues are common. They last only a few days and can cause crying, etc but should not lead to decreased appetite, etc. Postpartum depression is more serious and lingers. Estrogen is not used to treat postpartum depression. You need to talk to your doctor.

Can you explain how parathyroid hormone injections make bones stronger when too much parathyroid hormone made by the body weakens bones?

Good question!: Parathyroid hormone (pth_ causes two main effects - a decrease in phosphorous in the blood, and an increase in calcium. If a body makes too much PTH (constant, high levels) it will leach the calcium from the bones to keep the blood levels up. Injections, however, are intermittent, lower concentrations that can stimulate bone strengthening by absorbing the calcium in the bood.

Fewer side effects: Taking lower dose estrogen birth control pills means that you're less likely to have side effects like breast tenderness/swelling. Besides preventing pregnancy, they can also: make periods lighter and less painful, help pms, prevent menstrual migraines, help acne, prevent unwanted hair, reduce ovarian cysts, and reduce the risk of cancer in the uterus lining and ovaries.

Can using Premarin (conjugated estrogens) cause lung cancer?

2 doctor answers8 doctors weighed in
Dr. Aaron Milstone

Unlikely: It is unknown if Estrogens cause lung cancer but the answer is probably not. The two biggest causes of lung cancer include smoke exposure (passive or active) and radon. Premarin (conjugated estrogens) (an estrogen) is associated with heart attack, stroke, and blood clot but lung cancer is usually not considered an association with taking this drug.

There are several groups of scientists with a strong track record of tying hormones and hormone to a heightened risk of lung cancer. I am not sure the data are that compelling. I have read and reviewed several grants to further investigate this and I remain unconvinced of any connection.
