Rest, massage: Try to rest the area as much as possible. If the injury is a fresh strain, ice for the first 48 hours. Past that time frame warm compresses, warm shower and gentle massage of the strained muscle to improve blood flow to area. Nsaid's may be helpful in alleviating pain and inflammation, but use caution with these if you are on blood thinners or have GI problems like ulcers or gastritis.
