It is a coping : Mechanism. It can allow you to feel physical pain to distract from emotional pain. If you feel empty & numb - you feel something. Punishing oneself feels good to some people. The angry feelings may dissipiate as you cut yourself. But ultimately - this is not a healthy way to cope. Please get help. Consider dialectical behavior therapy. Take care.
