For pain: Root canal work is a dental procedure in which the main nerve in the center of each root of a tooth is dug out under anesthesia and cement is put in place. This prevents infection from channeling down the canal and entering the jaw which can be quite painful. It is usually done after an episode of pain in a particular tooth.
