12 hours/72 hours: The egg will remain viable for up to 12 hours or more; sperm may remain viable for up to 72 hours depending upon the circumstances. If they unite during that period of time and then implant in the uterus, you're pregnant.

A 30-year-old female asked:
How long does it take for sperm to fertilise the egg ? Do you always ovulate on day 14?

Dr. Michael Opsahl answered

Hours/No: The sperm fertilize an egg over the course of a few hours. The egg is only able to be fertilized for about 12-18 hours, so we usually recommend sex every 2 days during the fertile week to make sure sperm are in the tube when the egg ovulates. Ovulation can occur between day 6-21 and about 3% of ovulations occur during the days of the expected menses. This happens because cycles vary so much. Best.
