See below: Because colds or viral upper respiratory infections are self limited and resolve on their own, any treatment would have to be extremely safe with no potential serious side effects. Most anti-viral drugs have the risk of serious side effects which prevenst them for being used against this annoying but benign infection. Hopefully one day a safe and effective anti-viral treatment will be found.

Colds: There are over a 100 viruses that cause the common cold. Viruses can mutate. Severity of common cold symptoms are usually not extreme and the disease is usually self- limiting. These are reasons why it wouldn't be a high priority to look for this cure.

Not a cold : The "common cold" doesn't last 7 years. You may be having symptoms that to you feel as if they could be due to a cold but are in reality due to something such as sinusitis or allergies. You need to see an ENT specialist.

Virus infection: The common cold is a viral infection of the lining of the nose, throat, etc. That is passed from person to person. There are actually many viruses that cause what we know as the "common cold". Probably, this number is not quantifiable.
