A member asked:

Could you tell me what happens to the baby when you have high blood sugar?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Sugar load: The fetus begins to make it's own Insulin after the organs form and high blood sugar levels push extra sugar across the placenta to baby. The baby reacts by increasing Insulin output and storing the sugar in the organs and body.Over time the infant of a diabetic mother can become over sized, develop some birth defects, and have late maturing lungs.
