Your blood contains certain antigens (molecules on red blood cells) which allow for classification. If you have a antigens, you have blood type a. If you have a antigens and no rh antigens, you have blood type a-. A free way to determine your blood type is to donate blood through the red cross.

Groupings: The blood is separated by antibodies into a, b and o. Then by factors that can be present or absent giving the positive or negative. However the blood cross matching goes much more in depth these days.

Rhesus blod type (Rh: Exposure to cell surface antigens on blood cells can trigger the production of antibodies. The primary antigens that need to be matched to prevent destruction of foreign cells by transfusion reactions are the a & b antigens. In addition, antigen d should also be matched. ( the "d" antigen is one of the 50 rhesus antigens found in humans. If you lack this antigen on your cells you are rh negative.

Nope: Blood type is surprisingly complicated. Not only do your kids inherit their blood type from both you and their father, the genetics of blood type is not as straightforward as it seems.
