Ophthalmologist: An ophthalmologist can evaluate diplopia or double vision, to see if it is an eye muscle problem, something inside the eye, or an eye-brain communication problem. Sometimes, in difficult to evaluate cases, we may defer to a subspecialist, neuro ophthalmologist.

Ophthalmologist: Double vision should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist. If it occurs with only one eye open, it is related to the eye itself. If it only occurs when both eyes are open, it is an alignment issue. This is usually related to a nerve or muscle problem. Your ophthalmologist can refer you for tests and further work-up by other specialists if necessary (neurologist, for example).
