A member asked:

Could you get plague from another person?

2 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Yes: The plague is usually bubonic (one catches it from being bit by infected fleas or rodents, and the bacteria infects one's lymph nodes) or pneumonic (one catches it by breathing infected moisture droplets exhaled, sneezed, or coughed out by an infected person or animal, and the bacteria infects one's lungs). Without treatment, pneumonic plague is fatal.

Yes.: Plague is transmitted by flea bite, scratch or bite from infected cat, direct handling of tissue or respiratory secretion from infected animals, inhalation of aerosolized droplet from infected human, or by laboratory exposure. If your friend has plague it is best not to visit them as infection can be caused by as few as ten organisms. Plague is considered a very serious bioterror threat.
