Sore throat recurs: Stop smoking. Cultures if possible of any phlegm or sputum should also guide therapy if a reliable one can be obtained. Sometimes a persistent sinus infection may cause this, and an extended antibiotic course may be necessary to eradicate. If still no luck careful exam of upper airway, nose, sinuses, with search for anatomic problems (drainage pathways, etc) may be necessary.
