2 systems: Circadian and homeostatic system. The homeostatic system builds up sleep pressure throughout the day. The circadian system has a 24 hour pattern to it. The circadian system is an alerting system and the homeostatic system is the sleep pressure system. When the homeostatic system over powers the alerting drive, you get sleep.
