A member asked:

How come i had guillain-barre syndrome, but nobody else in the family has ever had it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not familial: Gbs is a postinfectious, immune-mediated disease. Cellular and humoral immune mechanisms probably play a role in its development. Most patients report an infectious illness in the weeks prior to the onset of gbs. Epidemiological studies have failed to demonstrate a familial connection or predilection for the syndrome.
