Get a culture!: Red, irritated vulva with vaginal discharge after unprotected sex should be evaluated for a sexually transmitted infection. A pelvic exam using a speculum can visualize the cervix and take a culture of the discharge. Your doctor should also look at the discharge under a microscope to check for bacteria, white blood cells, clue cells, hyphae, trichomonas or other cause of your symptoms.
