Pleurisy: Chest pain which occurs when one takes a deep breath is called pleurisy. It is usually the result of irritation of the lining surrounding the lung (called the pleura). It can be caused by a virus, a bacterial infection, a blood clot in the lung or it can occur following surgery on the heart or lung (in which case it is due to the reaction to blood or tissue in the pleural space after surgery).
