Anywhere: Moles are growths composed on any skin surface whether it's on the trunk or arms or feet or even the scalp and face --- anywhere the growth of moles is usually genetically determined. Moles is a generic term for what we dermatologists typically refer to as "nevi" , collections of nevus cells. Usually these growths are benign but certain irregular nevi can be atypical or even cancerous.

Genes and Sun: Some moles appear to genetic factors due to family history. These appear usually in early childhood or in the first few decades of life. Sun also can increase the number of moles by altering dna in the melanocytes in the skin to start a new mole. Using sunscreen and wearing a hat and staying out of the sun can help minimize the size and number of moles a person gets.
