What increases your risk of having any sort of hernia?

Congenital: Most hernias are a weakness in the abdominal wall from birth. Hernias can run in families. The mild weakness the person is born with can develop into a hernia over time. Hernias can also form at the site of prior abdominal operations.

Complex: Depends on the type of hernia and clinical scenario. In general, hernia patients have a collagen disorder more often than those without hernias. Other things that predispose to hernia are smoking or infection after abdominal operation, obesity, and pregnancy. While a hernia can occur with heavy activity, this by itself shouldn't be a risk factor. Hope this helps!
