Cause?: The caus needs to be determined - external irritation or underlying rectal problems. Persistent pruritic ani should be evaluated with sigmoidoscopy. Local treatment with anti itch creams, suppositorys and change in diet can be helpful. Oral charcoal brickettes can absorb irritants and decrease symptoms.

Most common : Causes of pruritus ani are caffeine and excess moisture. There is no correct amount of caffeine, so best to totally eliminate it for several weeks and allow area to heal, then reintroduce caffeine slowly to find your threshold. Also corn starch powder to bottom frequently and liberally helps with the excess moisture. Avoid chronic use of steroid creams!
