Like a cold sore: It looks like an ulcer. It hurts and burns. Similar to how a cold sore appears on your lip. Any mucous membrane can be affected including your tongue.

Red or white halo: Often herpes simplex cause a red or white halo around an ulcerated area on the tongue. It starts as a blister and after the blister pops you see the red or white halo around the ulcerated area.
