Many causes: If it is peripheral edema the causes include an underlying medical reason- hypothyroidism, venous stasis/insufficiency, heart disease, excess sodium intake, diabetes, or caused by medication. If it is arising from the ankle joints think arthritis. In either case, see your doctor to get at the cause of the swelling.
