How high, how long?: If you're just pre-diabetic could be years--but high blood sugars lead to blood vessel and nerve changes that can cause early strokes, heart attacks, blindness so you really need to know a lot more. If death is damage untreated juvenile diabetics can die in a diabetic coma in a few hours. Rarely older ones die in hyperosmolar coma in a few hours as well.
