An aseptic effusion can be due to an injury. If no injury occurs, an effusion can develop due to synovitis(acute inflammation of the joint). Patients with arthritis present with effusions as well when they are having a flair of the arthritis. A septic effusion means that you have an infection in that joint & that needs to be treated with at least an aspiration & antibiotics and possible surgery.
