Many causes: Although in many cases the cause isn't apparent, dilated cardiomyopathy is likely the result of damage to the myocardium by variety of infectious, metabolic and toxic agents. Toxic causes include - chronic long-term alcohol abuse; chemotherapy (a poison taken to kill cancer cells) with doxorubicin in particular; and more rare exposures to heavy metals, cobalt, organic solvents and mercury.
