Yes: The filter "catches" larger clots but is not intended to completely block the inferior vena cava. If you have deep venous thrombosis (dvts), they can break free and migrate through heart and into your lungs even with a filter. That is why the filter is routinely used in conjunction with blood thinner such as coumadin (warfarin). Be well.

PE w filter in?: Occasionally clot will extend from the filter up above it. This clot can still travel to the heart and lungs.

Yes. : Filters will stop most fatal pulmonary emboli, but clots small enough to slip through the struts of the filter can still embolize to the pulmonary arteries. Additionally sometimes clot that has been stopped by the filter may "propagate, " or grow, above it and serve as an additional source for potential pulmonary emboli.
