Most likely cause: To consider is a rib fracture. Since you don't share any further details in regards to him or his complaints it becomes difficult to make any further comments. If its a rib fracture the treatment is symptomatic meaning you treat the pain and the fracture gets better with time. I would take Ibuprofen for the symptoms up to three times a day and consider being evaluated by your internist. Good luck.
