Hard stool: He may have passed a hard stool which him to have pain. Try to regulate his diet by going easy on diary products. Wait a couple of weeks and then try again using behavior modification, i.E give hime a gold star every time he goes. After 5 stars he gets a reward, etc.

Relax: He'll learn. Soon enough he'll figure it out. There are many approaches online to research, but i'm sure he won't be doing it when he graduates from high school!
