Unlikely: A torn ligament is a serious injury which typically occurs only with significant trauma such as a ski accident or sports injury. A torn ligament will typically result in instability of the knee. So, if you have not had any significant trauma then it is unlikely to be a torn ligament. See a physician if your symptoms persist.

Probably not.: probably not, if you did not have an injury to the knee. It may be a problem specific to your kneecap joint. See a non-surgical sports medicine specialist for an evaluation and treatment plan.
