What does a bulging lump in my babys scrotum mean?

Could be a hernia: The lump may be due to a hernia. A hernia is due to a weaning in the muscles in the lower part of the abdomen, that cause the intestines to drop into the scrotum. In some cases, if it is present at birth, the bulge may be due to a "hydrocele", which is just a fluid collection in the scrotum that often resolves with time. It is best for your pediatrician to examine your baby to determine the cause.

Possible Hernia: There are a few possiblities. Some boys are born with a hydrocoele, which should resove with time. However any bulge, especiaaly one that is new, needs to be examined right away. It could be due to a hernia or a twisting of the testicle, both of these issues require surgery.

Likely hydrocele: Most scrotal swellings in infants are hyroceles however a few turn out to be hernias. Most infant scrotal hernias are easily reducible. You get a "squishy" feeling as it reduces when you squeeze it. Only needs urgent attention if becomes red, painful or tender.
